Last year, during the Polaris Dawn mission, I had the opportunity to witness four customized and space-themed IWC Ceramic Chronographs being worn by the astronauts. The mission, headed by Jared "Rook" Isaacman, aimed to accomplish the first private spaceflight. The watches, which are numbered and engraved with each astronaut's name and call sign, were generously donated by IWC and will be auctioned at Christie's New York, with all proceeds benefiting St. Jude Children's Research Hospital.
The Polaris Dawn crew, consisting of Isaacman, Sarah "Cooper" Gillis, and Anna "Walker" Menon, embarked on a five-day mission aboard a SpaceX Dragon spacecraft. Unfortunately, the launch was delayed due to unfavorable weather conditions. The mission's main objectives include flying through the Van Allen radiation belt and conducting a spacewalk. Additionally, the crew will test new spacesuits and a constellation of communication satellites, Starlink.
IWC's partnership with the Polaris Dawn mission follows their collaboration with Inspiration4, the world's first all-civilian mission to orbit. The brand has a strong affinity for space travel and has created unique timepieces specifically designed for these missions. The success of the collaboration with Inspiration4, which raised nearly half a million dollars for St. Jude Children's Research Hospital, motivated IWC to continue supporting space exploration.
The IWC Pilot's Watch Chronograph Edition "Polaris Dawn" features a white ceramic case with a dark blue lacquered dial, adorned with stars and the mission logo. The watch is powered by the Caliber 69380 automatic movement and includes a day and date display. With its unique design and connection to space travel, the Polaris Dawn watch is a testament to IWC's commitment to pushing boundaries and making a positive impact on Earth.
The auction of the four Polaris Dawn watches at Christie's New York will be the culmination of the mission. The funds raised will support the important work of St. Jude Children's Research Hospital, while also celebrating the achievements of the Polaris Dawn crew in their pioneering private spaceflight.
