Submariner Kermit 16610LV vs. Submariner Starbucks 126610LV: A Comparison

We compare two generations of black dial/green bezel Submariner watches.

Whether you like Rolex or not, it's hard to deny the quality and appeal of its watches. Today, we will be comparing two iconic versions of the Rolex Submariner - the Kermit 16610LV and the Starbucks 126610LV. Both watches have a green bezel and a black dial, but they are vastly different.

The Evolution of Rolex

Rolex's success lies in its evolutionary strategy. They constantly improve their timepieces while maintaining the same iconic design. The Kermit 16610LV was launched in 2003 to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the Submariner collection. It featured a green insert on the bezel and other minor changes, such as a revised dial with enlarged markers and hands.

Introducing the Starbucks 126610LV

In 2020, Rolex updated its Submariner collection, including the new green steel Submariner Date - the Starbucks 126610LV. This watch has a redefined design, a new generation movement, a redesigned bracelet, and updated proportions. It is considered the spiritual successor to the Kermit 16610LV.

Design Differences

While the Kermit and the Starbucks look very similar at first glance, there are important differences. The Starbucks is more robust and bulky, with a squarish case and larger crown guards. The Kermit has a more vintage feel with a thinner case and folded steel clasp. The bezels also differ, with the Kermit featuring anodized aluminium and the Starbucks incorporating a ceramic insert.

Movement and Bracelet

The Kermit is powered by the calibre 3135, one of Rolex's most revered movements. It has a power reserve of 48 hours and is regulated by a Swiss lever escapement. The Starbucks, on the other hand, is equipped with the calibre 3235, which offers a power reserve of 70 hours and features the optimized Chronergy escapement. The bracelets also differ, with the Kermit having solid end-links and the Starbucks featuring the Oysterlock folding clasp with the Glidelock extension system.

Conclusion

While the Starbucks 126610LV is objectively a better watch in terms of specifications, the Kermit 16610LV holds a certain charm that can't be measured. Ultimately, it comes down to personal preference. Both watches are exceptional in their own ways and are a testament to Rolex's commitment to excellence.
