It is not common for us to review watches that are outside of our personal preferences. However, the Girard-Perregaux Laureato Chronograph 42mm caught our attention with its unique design. This French independent brand, founded in 2016, offers a wide variety of vintage-inspired watches that are assembled in France. The Laureato model, in particular, is often overlooked in the market due to its higher price point and competition. But upon closer inspection, we were impressed by its beauty and craftsmanship.
The history and controversy surrounding the Laureato make it even more intriguing. Originating from the "golden" Genta age of design, the Laureato is often compared to iconic watches such as the Audemars Piguet Royal Oak and the Patek Philippe Nautilus. While it may bear some resemblance to these watches, the Laureato stands on its own as the only member of the trio to feature a quartz caliber and be officially chronometer-certified.
The standout feature of the Laureato Chronograph 42mm is its silver panda-style dial. The dial surface is unobstructed and features a matte black ring with white minute marks. The blued and polished indices add a touch of elegance, while the Clou de Paris pattern gives the dial a unique texture. Subdials at 3, 6, and 9 display running seconds, hours, and minutes. The dial is completed with an applied GP logo at 12 and a date window at 4:30.
The case and bracelet of the Laureato are made from 904L stainless steel and feature a blend of finishing techniques. The octagonal bezel has a radially brushed anterior surface and polished side walls. The integrated lugs have fine horizontal brushing and polished facets. The bracelet tapers down to a butterfly clasp with the GP initials. The overall design of the watch is both restrained and flashy, making it a perfect balance between elegance and sportiness.
Inside the Laureato beats the automatic in-house chronograph caliber GP03300. While the movement is hidden beneath the screwdown caseback, it is decorated with Cotes de Geneve, chamfering, and straight graining. The movement operates the chronograph, date, and small seconds complications, and has a power reserve of 46 hours.
The Girard-Perregaux Laureato Chronograph 42mm has grown on us during our time with it. Its balanced design and eye-catching dial make it a standout piece. While the price may be prohibitive for some, it is a great choice for those looking for a sporty tool watch with a rich heritage. Overall, the Laureato Chronograph 42mm is a beautiful timepiece that deserves more attention.
