Forty years ago, Casio revolutionized the watch industry with the introduction of the G-SHOCK DW5000-C, a timepiece designed to withstand extreme conditions. Created by engineer Kikuo Ibe, the original G-SHOCK became a symbol of durability, famously showcased in a commercial where it was used as a hockey puck. Over the decades, the G-SHOCK line has expanded into a diverse family of watches, but the original remains a legend.
To honor its legacy, Casio has reissued the iconic design with the G-SHOCK DW5000R-1A. Produced at the Yamagata factory, where the first G-SHOCK was made, this revival stays true to the original while incorporating subtle modern updates. The stainless steel case, clad in black resin, mirrors the 1983 model, though the case size has been slightly increased to 42.3mm. The watch retains its 200m water resistance and features a screw-lock caseback, a nod to its predecessor.
The DW5000R-1A maintains the classic black, white, yellow, and red color scheme of the original, with an LCD screen framed by the signature brick pattern. The digital quartz Module 3576 offers the same functions: stopwatch, alarm, timer, and automatic calendar. However, the backlight has been upgraded to a bright white LED for better visibility. Additionally, Casio has used bio-based resin for the strap and case cladding, reflecting the brand’s commitment to sustainability.
Over four decades, the G-SHOCK has become more than just a watch—it’s a cultural icon. The DW5000R-1A Origin Revival is a testament to its enduring appeal, offering both new enthusiasts and longtime fans a chance to own a piece of horological history. With its blend of retro design and modern functionality, this watch proves that the G-SHOCK legacy is as strong as ever.
